چکیده
Research Objectives To understand how pre-injury health status present five-years preceding traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects direct medical cost two years post-injury. Design Retrospective cohort study. Setting Publicly funded healthcare system in Ontario, Canada. Participants Patients age 19 or older the emergency department (ED) acute care for a TBI between April 1, 2007 and March 31, 2014 (N=55,669). Interventions N/A. Main Outcome Measures Direct costs within of discharge. Results who received ED (81.9% total sample) incurred median $2,492/male patient (average $12,342/patient) $3,508/female $12,372/patient) injury; 37 factors were significantly associated with increased costs. first their (18.1%) $25,081/male $63,060/patient) $30,277/female $65,285/patient) 21 Among more prevalent factors, those by at least 50% included mental disorders, substance abuse, disorders conditions frequently observed among elderly, cardiovascular stroke emergencies involving brain, metabolic abdominal symptoms, symptoms abdomen pelvis, genitourinary prostate, pulmonary other emergencies. Conclusions post-TBI differed patients without adverse pre-existing status. OBJECTIVE We aimed to estimate from a societal perspective the 1-year and lifetime direct and indirect costs of traumatic brain injury (TBI) for New Zealand (NZ) in 2010 projected to 2020. METHODS An incidence-based cost of illness model was developed using data from the Brain Injury Outcomes New Zealand in the Community Study. Details of TBI-related resource use during the first 12 months af...

In much of the developed world, the HIV epidemic has largely been controlled by antiretroviral treatment. Even so, there is growing concern that HIV-infected individuals may be at risk for accelerated brain aging and a range of cognitive impairments. What promotes or resists these changes is largely unknown. There is also interest in discovering factors that promote resilience to HIV and combat...
